Compounded Omeprazole (Prilosec) for Dogs, Cats, and Horses.

Omeprazole is a medication used in humans and animals to help reduce stomach acid. When given orally, omeprazole can be used to treat or prevent stomach ulcers in humans and animals. It is important to remember that this medication takes time to work. Often effects of the medication are not seen for 1-2 days, with max effect taking almost a week or longer to be seen. Omeprazole does require a prescription from your veterinarian or doctor in order to be dispensed unless it is prescribed at the over-the-counter dose. You and your veterinarian should discuss if this is the best option for your pet.

Omeprazole is given orally and can be compounded to the desired strength and flavor that best suits your patient/pet. We compound Omeprazole into suspensions and capsules. This medication is best given 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Omeprazole interacts with many medications and supplements/vitamins. It is important to consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medication if you take other medications. If you miss a dose do not double up on the medication. Wait until the next dose is due and follow the normal dosing schedule as directed. If your animal is pregnant, may become pregnant, or is nursing, talk to your vet about the risks of using this medication. It may reduce birth weight of animals born to mothers receiving this drug.

Common side effects of omeprazole are often mild but may include vomiting, decreased appetite, and diarrhea. Please contact your veterinarian/doctor immediately as these symptoms persist or worsen over time. Overdoses of this medication can be serious but are often mild. If you suspect an overdose, contact your veterinarian or poison control.
