Compounded Prednisone (Prednisolone) For Dogs, Cats & Other Pet Animals
Prednisone/Prednisolone is a medication used in humans and animals to help reduce inflammation and to treat hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease). It can also be used as an immunosuppressive and antineoplastic agent. For many species, prednisone and prednisolone are interchangeable. However, cats and horses absorb prednisolone better then prednisone and thus is the preferred form in these species. These medications take effect within as little as 1-2 hours after being given and clinical signs improve over time. Both medications require a prescription from your veterinarian or doctor in order to be dispensed. You and your veterinarian should discuss if this is the best option for your pet.
Prednisone/Prednisolone can be given orally or by transdermal route and can be compounded to the desired strength and flavor that best suits your patient/pet. We compound this medication into suspensions, capsules, dissolvable tablets (tiny tabs), transdermal creams, and chewable tablets. This should be given with food. If the patient vomits after receiving the dose on an empty stomach, the next dose should be given with food to decrease GI upset. If you miss a dose do not double up on the medication. Wait until the next dose is due and follow the normal dosing schedule as directed.
Common side effects of prednisone/Prednisolone include greater appetite, increased thirst, increase urination, and weight gain. If the patient experiences a lack of appetite or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, please contact your veterinarian/doctor immediately as these symptoms may indicate a serious reaction. Overdoses of this medication can be serious. If you suspect an overdose, contact your veterinarian or poison control.
