Tramadol pain relieving medication used to treat a variety of different aliments in many species. In humans, dogs and cats, it may be used to treat chronic pain. In dogs, it is sometimes used to reduce coughing. This medication should start to help your animal within 1-2 hours of taking the initial dose. However, it may take up two weeks before the desired affect is reached. Tramadol is a controlled substance and does require a prescription from your veterinarian or doctor in order to be dispense. Tramadol is taken orally or given by transdermal route and can be compounded into the desired strength and flavor that best suits your pet. We compound this medication into suspension, capsule, and transdermal creams. This medication can be given on an empty stomach or with food. It is important that the suspension is measured out precisely to the exact prescribed dosing and is only given as directed by the veterinarian. It is important not to miss any doses of this medication or it may not be effective. If you miss a dose do not double up on the medication. Wait until the next dose is due and follow the normal dosing schedule as directed.
Common side effects include sleepiness, lack of energy, weakness, and reduced appetite. If your animal experiences seizures, increased salivation, or signs of increased agitation please call your veterinarian immediately as these symptoms may indicate a serious reaction. Overdoses of this medication can be serious. If you suspect an overdose, contact your veterinarian or poison control.
